AWS Activate Credits: The Complete 2026 Guide

9 min read

Last verified against official pages: 21 September 2026. AWS changed the Activate tiers in August 2026, if a guide tells you the maximum is $100,000, it predates that change.

AWS Activate gives eligible startups promotional credits to offset their cloud bill. As of the most recent update, the programme runs three tiers, and the ceiling is higher than many published guides suggest.

This page covers what the tiers are, what the eligibility rules mean in practice, how to apply, the reasons applications are most commonly declined, and what happens when the credits run out.

Throughout, we separate three kinds of information: what AWS publishes as a requirement, what applicants commonly report, and what we recommend from our own experience supporting startups. We say which is which, because the difference matters when you are preparing an application.

01The three tiers

AWS’s credits page lists the following. (AWS Activate credits page)

TierCreditsHow you get in
Activate Founders$1,000 to start; select participants may qualify for up to $5,000 over timeApply directly. For bootstrapped and self-funded startups.
Activate PortfolioUp to $200,000Requires an Organization ID (Org ID) from an AWS Activate Provider: such as a VC, accelerator or angel investor.
AWS Credits for AI Startups$200,000+, invite-onlyInvite-only, for startups scaling beyond Portfolio. Handled through your AWS Account Manager.

The most important thing to understand the six-figure amounts sit behind provider affiliation. An unaffiliated startup applying on the open web is on the Founders path. If a page or a person implies you can reach $200,000 without a provider, treat that as a red flag.

02Eligibility, in plain terms

AWS statesAWS lists four baseline requirements: pre-Series B, founded in the last 10 years, an AWS account on a Paid Tier Plan, and either being new to Activate Credits or requesting more than you have previously received. (AWS Activate credits page)

“Pre-Series B”

Everything up to and including Series A qualifies: bootstrapped, pre-seed, angel, seed, Series A. Once you close a Series B, you are outside the programme. In our experiencesome funded founders assume they are ineligible when they are not, so it is worth checking.

“Founded in the last 10 years”

We recommend working from your incorporation date rather than the date you started operating. For Indian startups these are often different, and the incorporation date is the one that matches your registration records.

“AWS account on a Paid Tier Plan”

A Free Tier account does not meet this requirement. You need an account with a verified payment method that has been moved to a paid plan. Do this before you apply. Applicants reportthis is one of the most commonly missed requirements.

“New to Activate Credits, or requesting more than you previously received”

A previous approval does not lock you out. AWS states that if you now qualify for a larger package you receive the difference, not the full new amount, a startup that received $10,000 and later qualifies for $100,000 gets an additional $90,000. AWS also states that you must remain affiliated with the same provider, that you may not be eligible if you have switched providers, and that you must stay under the lifetime credit cap. (AWS's Activate credits FAQ article)

The Portfolio rule that catches people out. AWS states that Portfolio applicants must apply within 12 months of your most recent funding date. Raise money, wait 14 months to apply, and that round no longer counts. Few third-party guides mention this.

Also required for Portfolio, per AWS: you must not have previously received Activate credits of equal or greater value, and you need a fully functioning company website. (AWS Activate credits page)

03What the credits cover

AWS statesCredits apply to more than 200 eligible AWS services: compute, storage, databases, networking, analytics and more. They can also be used on third-party foundation models available through Amazon Bedrock, including models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral AI and Meta, and on eligible AWS Support Plans. (AWS's Activate credits FAQ article)

What AWS lists as not covered

  • Amazon Mechanical Turk
  • AWS Managed Services
  • AWS Professional Services
  • AWS Training and Certification
  • Any service not listed in the AWS Billing and Cost Management Console

How they are applied

Per AWS: credits offset new usage on a monthly basis. They do not apply retroactively to past bills. Allocation is automatic across eligible charges, you cannot direct credits to specific services, and AWS applies credits before charging your payment method. (AWS's Activate credits FAQ article)

Expiry

AWS states that credits expire usually within one to two years depending on the package, and your exact expiry date appears in the Billing console once approved. Because the clock runs from issue rather than first use, timing your application matters, we come back to this below.

04How to apply

The steps below follow AWS’s own application guidance. (AWS's step-by-step application guide)

  1. Create or sign in to your AWS Builder ID

Use your professional company email address. Keep your email domain, company website, AWS account and legal entity information consistent throughout the application: AWS asks for a business email matching your startup’s domain on your Activate profile and your credit application, and consistent domain information helps AWS validate your startup. Verify the Builder ID, then complete your Activate profile. (AWS Activate credits page)

  2. Get your AWS account onto a Paid Tier Plan

Add a valid payment method and upgrade. Confirm the account is fully verified before you continue.

  3. Choose your tier

Self-funded with no investor or accelerator behind you: apply for Founders. Backed by a VC, accelerator or incubator: check whether they are an Activate Provider and ask for their Org ID. AWS publishes a searchable provider directory. (AWS Activate Provider directory) Not sure which applies? See Founders vs Portfolio.

  4. Complete your startup details

Product description, funding stage, company profile, website. We recommend answering exactly as your public materials answer: In our experienceinconsistencies between the application and the live website are a frequent source of problems.

  5. Link your AWS account and submit

Attach the AWS account the credits should land in, using an account whose contact details also use your business email. Check the account ID before you submit.

06Why applications are declined

AWS does not publish a list of rejection reasons, and applicants report receiving a generic message rather than a specific cause. The causes below combine AWS’s published requirements with what applicants commonly report and what we see supporting startups. The full diagnostic, with how to confirm each cause and fix it, is on our rejection guide.

  • AWS account still on Free Tier. This fails a published requirement. Move to a Paid Tier Plan, then reapply.
  • Website does not establish a real product. AWS requires a fully functioning company website. Based on applicant reports, placeholders, coming-soon pages and sites with no clear product description are a frequent source of rejections.
  • Provider affiliation could not be confirmed. Portfolio only. The Org ID does not match, or the provider has not confirmed you as affiliated. This is resolved with your provider rather than with AWS.
  • Email domain does not match the company. AWS asks for a business email matching your startup’s domain. Applicants commonly report that applications from consumer email accounts draw extra scrutiny.
  • Funding round older than 12 months. Portfolio only, and a published requirement.
  • Company profile reads as a services business. AWS does not publish an exclusion for services firms, but applicants commonly report that consultancies, dev shops and agencies applying as startups are declined.
  • Already received equal or greater credits. A published requirement: you can move up, not sideways.

If you have been declined, we recommend a complete readiness review before you reapply: account verification, company identity consistency, website readiness, provider affiliation and tier: rather than resubmitting the same application.

07Indian startups: the DPIIT route

Startup India lists$5,000 in AWS Activate creditsfor DPIIT-recognised startups, applied for on the Portfolio path using Startup India’s Organization ID. Startup India’s page also lists access to AWS partner offers valued at up to $800,000, premium training content and curated accelerator programmes. (Startup India's AWS resource page)

This gives Indian startups a Portfolio-path option without a VC or accelerator behind them. If you are DPIIT-recognised and have not yet applied, check this route before choosing Founders.

08Two things to decide before you apply

Apply when you are about to spend, not when you are curious

AWS itself advises applying when you are ready to ramp up usage, because credits expire. (AWS's Activate credits FAQ article) In our experiencea startup that takes a large package while still prototyping often uses only part of it before it lapses. If you have a launch, a migration, a training run or a customer onboarding wave in the next quarter, that is the time.

Plan for the month the credits expire

In our experienceteams that build against free credits often make different architecture choices from teams building against an invoice: oversized instances, no reserved capacity planning, no cost tagging, loose autoscaling. The first full bill after expiry is often considerably higher than founders expected, and it tends to arrive when runway is tight.

In short

Think of credits as working capital with a fixed maturity date. Whether they helped you depends on what your architecture looks like when they run out.

09How MoreYeahs helps

We are an AWS partner. We do not sell Activate credits, nobody can, and we do not charge for application help. What we do

  • Tell you which tier you are likely to qualify for, in one conversation, before you spend time on an application
  • Review your readiness: account setup, verification, company identity consistency: before you apply or reapply
  • Architect what you build with the credits so the spend goes into product rather than idle capacity
  • Set up cost governance from day one, so you know what your real bill will look like before the credits expire
  • Manage the environment once you are running, if you would rather not hire a DevOps team at seed stage

Frequently Asked Questions

Per AWS: $1,000 to start on Founders, with select participants qualifying for up to $5,000 over time; up to $200,000 through Portfolio with a provider Org ID; above $200,000 by invitation for AI startups scaling beyond Portfolio.

No. Founders is designed for self-funded startups. The larger Portfolio amounts require an Org ID from an Activate Provider, which, for DPIIT-recognised Indian startups, can be Startup India.

AWS states they usually expire within one to two years depending on the package. The exact date appears in your Billing console once approved.

No. AWS states credits apply to new usage and do not apply retroactively.

No. AWS's promotional credit terms prohibit selling, licensing, renting or transferring credits.

Per AWS, you can reapply for a larger package with the same provider, subject to the lifetime cap, and you receive the difference.

Activate is designed for startups building their own product. AWS does not publish an exclusion for services firms, but applicants commonly report that services businesses are declined.

AWS currently states 5–10 business days. Portfolio applications may take longer because provider affiliation has to be verified. Credits appear in the Billing console within about 3–4 hours of approval.

Check which route you qualify for.

Six questions, the same ones we work through with founders. Send them over and we will come back to you with the route that fits and what to prepare before you apply.

We cannot sell you credits, nobody can, and nobody should offer to.
We never charge for application help and we cannot guarantee approval.
This is not an eligibility decision: AWS makes that. We tell you which route is worth preparing for.
Is your company incorporated, founded within the last 10 years, and pre-Series B?
Are you backed by a VC, angel investor, accelerator or incubator?
Is that investor or accelerator an AWS Activate Provider? (Check the provider directory and ask them directly)
Did your most recent funding round close within the last 12 months (or are you self-funded)?
Are you an Indian company with DPIIT recognition (or able to get it)?
Are you about to join an accelerator or raise from an investor that is a provider?
