AWS Activate Founders vs Portfolio: Which Tier Is Right for You?

7 min read

Last verified against official pages: 20 September 2026. Verified against AWS’s and Startup India’s official pages.

Founders is the self-serve path anyone can find. Portfolio is the path that reaches six figures, but only through an Activate Provider. Choosing between them is the most consequential decision in the application, because it affects not just what you receive now but what you can claim later.

This page compares the two side by side, walks through a decision tree, explains the Organization ID, covers the DPIIT route for Indian startups, and explains how moving up a tier works. For the full programme overview, see our complete AWS Activate guide.

01Side-by-side comparison

All figures and requirements below are as published by AWS (AWS Activate credits page)and in AWS’s Activate credits FAQ article (AWS's Activate credits FAQ article), except where marked.

03What an Organization ID is, and why it is confidential

AWS statesAn Organization ID (Org ID) is a code an Activate Provider gives to startups affiliated with it. AWS states that the Org ID is what confirms your eligibility for the Portfolio tier, and that Activate Providers include thousands of accelerators, angel investors, VC firms and startup-enabling organisations with a direct relationship with AWS. (AWS Activate Provider directory)

Where it comes from

Only from your provider. AWS does not issue Org IDs to startups directly. If you are affiliated with an investor or accelerator, ask them explicitly: “Are you an AWS Activate Provider, and can you give us your Organization ID?” In our experiencemany providers do not advertise that they hold one.

Why it is confidential

The Org ID is meant for the provider’s own affiliated startups. When you apply, the provider confirms you are genuinely affiliated. A code taken from a forum or a founder group will not come with that confirmation, and applicants report that unconfirmed affiliation is one of the more common reasons Portfolio applications stall.

Anyone offering you an Org ID publicly, or for a fee, is a red flag.

If you are affiliated but your provider has not confirmed you

Contact your provider first, confirm you are on their affiliated list and that you have their current Org ID, and ask them to raise it with AWS if needed. Our rejection guide covers this in detail (cause 7).

04The DPIIT route for Indian startups

For Indian companies there is a Portfolio-path option that does not depend on an investor.

Startup India lists$5,000 in AWS Activate creditsfor all DPIIT-recognised startups, under the Activate Portfolio programme, with eligibility tied to holding the Startup India DPIIT Organizational ID. Startup India’s page also lists access to AWS partner offers valued at up to $800,000, premium training content and curated accelerator programmes. (Startup India's AWS resource page)

What that means in practice

  • Bootstrapped and DPIIT-recognised Startup India is likely your best available route: $5,000 against the $1,000 Founders starting amount.
  • DPIIT-recognised and backed by a provider too compare the two packages before applying, and use the larger one. Because of the reapplication rules below, the choice is hard to undo.
  • Not yet DPIIT-recognised recognition is free through the Startup India portal and is worth getting before you apply. (Startup India recognition portal)

The Org ID for this route is requested from Startup India, not from AWS. Our DPIIT guide walks through recognition, requesting the Org ID and applying.

05Moving up a tier later

AWS statesAWS states that you can apply for credits more than once if you still meet the requirements, as long as: (AWS's Activate credits FAQ article)

  • your new application requests a higher amount than your previously approved credits;
  • you have not reached the maximum lifetime credit cap; and
  • for a higher-tier offer from a provider, you remain affiliated with the same provider: AWS notes you may not be eligible if you have switched providers or no longer meet the criteria.

When approved, you receive the difference, not the full new amount. AWS’s own example: a startup that previously received $10,000 and now qualifies for $100,000 gets an additional $90,000.

What this means for your decision

Credits are not cumulative across paths the way founders sometimes assume.

  • Taking Founders when Portfolio was available leaves you claiming only the difference later, and, if the larger package comes from a provider you were not using before: possibly facing the switched-provider condition.
  • Taking a smaller provider package first (for example, Startup India’s $5,000) and later joining an accelerator with a larger package raises the same question. Check eligibility with the new provider before you apply.

In our experiencethe founders who get the most from Activate make one well-timed application on the best route available to them, rather than stacking small packages.

06Common mistakes when choosing a tier

  • Applying for Founders because it is the visible, self-serve path: without asking your investor, accelerator or incubator whether they are a provider.
  • Applying for Portfolio without an Org ID, or with one your provider has not confirmed.
  • Missing the 12-month funding window. AWS states that Portfolio applicants must apply within 12 months of your most recent funding date.
  • Applying before you are ready to spend. AWS states credits expire usually within one to two years depending on the package, and advises applying when you are ready to ramp up usage.
  • Using inconsistent details. AWS asks for a professional company email on your Builder ID, and a business email matching your domain on your profile and application. Keep your email domain, website, AWS account and legal entity consistent throughout.

07How MoreYeahs helps

We are an AWS partner. We cannot sell you credits, charge you to apply, or guarantee approval. What we can do is help you choose the right route before you apply, which provider, which tier, and when: then review your readiness and plan what you build with the credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Per AWS, Founders is for self-funded startups and starts at $1,000, with select participants qualifying for up to $5,000 over time. Portfolio is for startups affiliated with an Activate Provider, goes up to $200,000, and requires the provider’s Organization ID.

You need an Org ID from an Activate Provider. Providers include accelerators and startup-enabling organisations as well as investors, and for DPIIT-recognised Indian startups, Startup India lists a Portfolio-path package.

From your provider. AWS does not issue Org IDs to startups directly.

Per AWS, you can apply again if your new application requests a higher amount and you are under the lifetime cap. You receive the difference, not the full new amount.

Yes. AWS states Portfolio applicants must be pre-Series B and apply within 12 months of their most recent funding date, if they have raised.

AWS currently states 5–10 business days for a response. Portfolio applications may take longer because provider affiliation has to be verified.
