AWS Activate Credits for Indian Startups: The DPIIT Route
Last verified against official pages: 19 September 2026. Verified against Startup India and AWS official pages.
Most guides to AWS Activate are written for American startups. They assume you have a VC, they talk about Delaware incorporation, and they describe the self-serve route starting at $1,000. If you are an Indian startup, there is another route, and it is rarely covered properly. Our complete AWS Activate guide covers the programme as a whole; this page covers the India-specific path.
Startup India operates an AWS Activate route for DPIIT-recognised startups. Startup India lists$5,000 in AWS Activate credits for all DPIIT-recognised startups: against the $1,000 starting amount on the self-serve Founders tier, as listed by AWS. No equity round or accelerator is required. The same Startup India page also lists access to exclusive AWS partner offers valued at up to $800,000, along with premium training content and curated accelerator programmes. (Startup India's AWS resource page)
How to read this page.“Startup India lists” and “AWS states” mean a published requirement or figure, linked beside the claim. “Founders report” means experiences shared by founders: useful, but not official rules. “In our experience” is MoreYeahs’ own recommendation.
01Why this route exists, and what it changes
AWS Activate has two main paths. Founders is self-serve and starts at $1,000. Portfolio requires an Organization ID from an Activate Provider and goes considerably higher, but providers are usually VCs, accelerators and angel investors, so bootstrapped founders often assume Portfolio is closed to them.
Startup India changes that for Indian companies. Its AWS page describes the benefit under the Activate Portfolio programme, with eligibility tied to association with Startup India DPIIT and its Organizational ID. DPIIT recognition is free and not linked to equity. (Startup India's AWS resource page)
If you are DPIIT-recognised and have not yet applied, check this route before choosing Founders. Taking the smaller Founders package first can limit what you can claim later: see Choosing your provider below.
02What you need to qualify
Startup India liststhese eligibility criteria for the Activate Portfolio benefit: (Startup India's AWS resource page)
- Associated with Startup India DPIIT and holding their Organizational ID
- Not having previously received AWS Activate credits of equal or greater value from an Activate Provider
- Self-funded or funded pre-Series B
- A fully functioning company website
- Founded in the past 10 years
AWS’s own baseline requirements also apply to every Activate application, including an AWS account on a Paid Tier Plan. A Free Tier account does not meet this. In our experienceit is one of the most commonly missed requirements, so add a valid payment method and confirm the account has moved to a paid plan before you apply. (AWS Activate credits page)
03Get DPIIT recognition, if you do not have it
Recognition is free and done online through the Startup India portal. (Startup India recognition portal) In broad terms you need to be incorporated as a Private Limited Company, an LLP or a Registered Partnership: sole proprietorships are not eligible. Check the portal for the current criteria before applying.
Founders report receiving their certificate and DPIIT recognition number within a few days of a correctly completed application. Plan for longer rather than assuming that.
Fill the form carefully. In our experience, the details you enter here become the reference point your later applications are checked against: your website, your AWS account and your incorporation records. An inaccuracy at this stage carries through everything that follows.
DPIIT recognition is worth having regardless of AWS: the Startup India portal sets out tax, compliance and procurement benefits for recognised startups. Cloud credits are one benefit among several.
04Request the Startup India Organization ID
The Org ID comes from Startup India, not from AWS. The Organization ID is issued by the Activate Provider: here, Startup India. Applicants report that AWS Support responses on the AWS re:Post forum direct founders to contact Startup India for the code rather than providing it. In our experiencestarting with Startup India saves time.
Where to request it
Startup India’s AWS resource page lists two contact addresses for queries: (Startup India's AWS resource page)
Write from your company email address, state that you are DPIIT-recognised, include your DPIIT recognition number, and request the AWS Activate Organization ID.
Some founders report obtaining the code by calling the Startup India support line and quoting their DPIIT (formerly DIPP) recognition number. If email is slow, that is worth trying.
Two things to get right
- Write from your company domain, not a personal address. The request comes from a recognised entity and should look like it.
- Treat the code as confidential. Org IDs are meant for a provider’s own affiliated startups. Codes shared in founder groups are, in our experience, often out of date, and passing yours around puts the route at risk for everyone.
05Apply
Use your professional company email throughout.Create or sign in to your AWS Builder ID using your professional company email address, and keep your email domain, company website, AWS account and legal entity information consistent throughout the application. AWS’s credits page asks for a professional email on the Builder ID (AWS Activate credits page), and AWS’s application guide asks for a business email matching your startup’s domain on your Activate profile and credit application. Timeline
AWS currently states that applicants should typically expect a response within 5–10 business days. Portfolio applications may require additional provider-affiliation verification and could take longer. AWS states that approved credits appear in your Billing console within about 3–4 hours after approval. (AWS Activate credits page)
06India-specific issues that affect applications
AWS does not publish rejection reasons. The issues below come from applicant reports and from our experience supporting Indian startups; they arise from how Indian companies are commonly structured. Our rejection guide covers all eight causes in full.
Your legal entity name and your brand name differ
You incorporate as one name and trade as another. Your MCA records show one name, your website another, your AWS account a third, your LinkedIn page a fourth. AWS asks for consistent information to validate your startup, and applicants report that applications stall where these do not reconcile.
Fix make your registered legal entity name visible and consistent across your AWS account, your Activate profile, your website footer and your LinkedIn company page. Trading under a brand is fine as long as the legal entity is findable and matches.
GST and billing details do not match the recognised entity
In our experiencemismatches between the entity on the AWS account and the DPIIT-recognised entity cause delays. Keep your GST registration and billing address aligned with the entity that holds DPIIT recognition.
Incorporation date versus “founded” date
Eligibility requires the company to have been founded in the past 10 years. Many Indian founders operate informally for a year or two before incorporating. We recommend entering your incorporation date, since that is the date your registration records show.
The website is a placeholder
A fully functioning company website is a published requirement from both Startup India and AWS. In our experienceit is a frequent problem for early Indian startups running on a landing page and a WhatsApp number.
You need a homepage that says what the product does and who it is for, a product page with something concrete on it, evidence of a team and working contact details. This is typically a few days of work.
07Choosing your provider
This part needs more thought than form-filling.
If you have more than one possible provider, choose deliberately.Startup India lists $5,000 for DPIIT-recognised startups. Many Indian incubators, accelerators and state startup missions are Activate Providers in their own right, and their packages can be larger: AWS’s provider directory is the place to check. (AWS Activate Provider directory)
The rules on taking more credits later matter here. AWS states that you receive the difference, not the full new amount, must remain with the same provider, and must stay under the lifetime credit cap. So if you take $5,000 through Startup India and later join an accelerator offering more, moving up through the new provider may not be straightforward. (AWS's Activate credits FAQ article)
Our recommended order
- Before applying, ask every organisation you are affiliated with: incubator, accelerator, state startup mission, angel, VC: whether they are an AWS Activate Provider. Ask explicitly; in our experience, many do not advertise it.
- If one of them offers a larger package than the Startup India route, consider using that one.
- If Startup India is your only provider route, it is worth taking: $5,000 against the $1,000 Founders starting amount.
- If you are about to join an accelerator that is a provider, consider waiting.
Apply when you are ready to spend. AWS states that credits expire usually within one to two years depending on the package, and advises applying when you are ready to ramp up usage. If your launch or migration is a quarter away, applying next quarter usually gets you more value.
Still weighing the two paths? Our Founders vs Portfolio comparison lays them side by side.
08What happens when the credits run out
For Indian startups this deserves attention. Seed rounds are often smaller and runways tighter, so the first full bill after credits expire can hurt more.
In our experiencethe post-credit bill is often considerably higher than founders expected. That is usually not because AWS is expensive, it is because teams that build against free credits make different choices from teams building against an invoice: oversized instances, no reserved capacity, no cost tagging, loose autoscaling.
In short
Think of credits as working capital with a fixed maturity date. Whether they helped depends on what your architecture looks like on the day they run out.
If you are in that window now: credits granted, expiry approaching, no clear picture of the real bill, it is a solvable problem, and easier to solve before the invoice arrives.
09How MoreYeahs helps
We are an AWS partner based in Indore, working with Indian startups on cloud architecture, cost management and managed operations.
To be direct about the limits: we cannot sell you credits, we cannot charge you to apply, and we cannot guarantee approval. Any firm suggesting otherwise is one to walk away from.
What we do
- Help you work out which route fits: Startup India, another provider, or self-serve, in one conversation
- Review your readiness: account setup, entity consistency, profile alignment
- Assess rejected applications if you have already been declined
- Architect what you build so the credits produce product rather than idle capacity
- Forecast the post-credit bill well before it lands, and put cost governance in place early
